There is an idea that if you are an American, you also play soccer and listen to Taylor Swift and enjoy going to the beach or going skiing. If you’re an American girl, then you’re a daddy’s girl and you love the popular brands. Jack Kerouac says “This is the story of America. Everybody’s doing what they think they’re supposed to do,” and that quote perfectly proves that many people believe that there is mold that you must fit if you are America. Well, I believe that nobody has to stick to those molds and that everyone should do what they want if it makes them happy- you don’t have to conform to fit a certain image of an American.
An example of this is my mother. My mom grew up in the prestigious and generally snobby area of Fairfield County. She lived in Darien, CT and went to private school- constantly surrounded by wealth a snobby families and peers, but she always stuck to her and her families core values. She never was the girl who insisted on having all of the new things immediately and made her dad spend ridiculous amounts of money on her because, just because thats what the girls around her were doing, she knew what really mattered and has taught me the same values in my life.
My mom relates to the quote by Jack Kerouac because although where she grew up, part of their lives is having the newest and best thing, and thats what everyone thinks they are supposed to do but that doesn't have to be the case at all. For some people, having money and being able to have instant gratification is part of a successful American Experience, but it doesn't have to be that way at all- everyone lives their life differently and if you're happy, then I think you have achieved the American Dream- this I believe.
