Reflection:
When most people think of Miss America they picture a gorgeous, thin, tall and nice young woman. And then they think to themselves wow this is what the media wants all young american woman to look up to and to emulate. Because as Jack Kerouac says "This is the story of America. Everybody's doing what they think they're supposed to do." Young women and girls everywhere will look at the Miss America Pageant contestants and see the quote that is proudly exhibited at the top of the organization's homepage: "Miss America represents the highest ideals. She is a real combination of beauty, grace and intelligence, artistic and refined. She is a type which the American Girl might well emulate." Having that quote proudly exhibited at the top of the page for everyone to see proves that the people of the Miss America organization believe that this is how every American girl should look and behave- which puts a negative mind set into our youth, making them believe that they are "supposed" to weigh a certain about and look and behave a certain way. And sadly, becoming just like these girls has recently become a goal of many young women and will slowly become the "story" of their American youth. |
