Reflection:
The American Dream is not something that anyone should be afraid of, but in this slam poem, the opening lines states "someone explain the difference between convicts in the prisons and victims of the system." That system that these four slam poets are talking about is the government and the people who are supposed to be the leaders of this country. These poets are talking mostly about the racism in the country and about how racism isn't a part of the American Dream but of a underlying issue. Jack Kerouac once said "This is the story of America. Everybody's doing what they think they're supposed to do." These four men are talking about their stories and one of the most striking remarks is "I was born into a wrapped star spangled banner with the red hole in it" and he means that even though he was born into America, he never felt as though he fit into the common population, since the day he was born. But isn't the point of the American Dream and the America Story, that Jack Kerouac is talking about, is for all men to be created equal and be given equal opportunities. However, not everyone becomes that lucky. "The declaration of Independence is dependent on race and gender, but we all breathe the same." It is about time that America started truly living the Story of America because what we truly are supposed to do, is give equality to everybody- that is the true American Dream.
